Trio Hochelaga

Founded in 2000, Trio Hochelaga rapidly distinguished itself on the Canadian musical scene as one of the country’s most important musical ensembles. Violinist Anne Robert, cellist Paul Marleyn and pianist Stéphane Lemelin share their passion for the chamber music repertoire ranging from the classical era to contemporary music. Their repertoire includes the great works of the literature, and places a particular emphasis on French music, with a mission to explore the latter’s lesser-known treasures.

Bearing Montreal’s original Iroquois name, the Trio Hochelaga has been invited since its inception to participate in the major music festivals in Canada, including the Lanaudière International Music Festival, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, the Festival of the Sound, the Guelph Spring Festival, the Orford Arts Centre Festival, the Agassiz Chamber Music Festival and the Prince Edward County Chamber Music Festival. Trio Hochelaga premiered Jacques Hétu’s Triple Concerto with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra at the Lanaudière Festival. A highlight of the ensemble’s tour of Taiwan and Japan in 2004 was to appear as guests of the Tokyo New City Orchestra in performing Beethoven’s Triple Concerto at Tokyo’s Sumida Triphony Hall. In the fall of 2008, Trio Hochelaga gave performances in China, including a concert in the first chamber music festival held at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music. In 2010, Trio Hochelaga celebrates in 10th anniversary. One of the main activity is their debut at Wigmore Hall in London.

Trio Hochelaga’s several recordings, ranging from Arensky to lesser-known French composers, have been received with fervent enthusiasm in the press. Their ATMA Classique recording of trios of Fauré and Pierné was awarded highest honours by the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique. Other releases include recordings by Théodore Dubois, Guy Ropartz and Rhené-Bâton and have likewise elicited rave reviews: “Trio Hochelaga displays evident affection, contagious enthusiasm and exemplary technique, and the sound recording is clear and vivid. A real discovery!” (La Presse). Trio Hochelaga presents an annual series of concerts in Montreal and Ottawa, and is honoured to receive annual career development grants from the Canada Council and the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec.
